Rabat - Once again, Hamid Chabat, the head of Morocco’s Istiqlal party (Independence party), an opposition party, called for the adoption of English in Morocco’s educational system.

During a visit to the American Language Center in Fez, Hamid Chabat, stressed the importance of English in “political, economic and communicative fields.”

In a short speech he delivered before students and school officials, the mayor of Fez added that English has “become the language of research, science and knowledge par excellence, and therefore educational programs should take this fact into account.”

This is not the first time that the head of the independence party has called for strengthening the presence of English in Morocco’s educational system.

In a video posted on YouTube last February, Chabat went a step farther and called for making English the second official language in Morocco instead of French.

“The official languages of Morocco are Arabic and Amazigh, and I can say that in the future we have to make sure that English is the second language in Morocco, and that the rest of languages are equal,” he said.

“It is inconceivable that while English is the official language in France, Morocco still considers French an official language,” he added at the time.
