To better manage the religious field in Morocco and avoid any excess in religious texts that contradict Morocco’s doctrine, Morocco decided on Wednesday to print one million copies of a standardized Qur’an annually.
In parallel with this decision, the government created Mohamed VI Foundation for the Publication of the Holy Qur’an. The latter will be in charge of the publication and distribution of the standardized Qur’an, and will henceforth control all Qur’an editions distributed in Morocco.
Half of the one million copies will go to Moroccan mosques, one third will be exported to West Africa and the rest will be distributed in places of worship frequented by Moroccans living abroad (MRE).
It’s worth noting that there is only one Qur’an for all Muslims of all doctrines revealed to the prophet Mohammed (pbuh) by angel Gabriel and the Qur’an text has remained intact until the present.
However, there are several readings of the Qur’an that slightly differ in some pronunciation and grammatical rules such as Warch, Hafs etc. In Morocco, the reading of Warch is being officially accredited.
Last year, Morocco sent over 30 thousand copies of the Qur’an to France in order to satisfy the increasing demands of the Moroccan community in this European country.
Morocco is also keen on sending thousands of copies of the Qur’an to a number of African countries that have special spiritual bond with Morocco because of the Sufi trend shared by these countries, especially counties like Senegal, Gabon and others.
