Rabat - The Moroccan authorities are taking the ongoing violence in Libya, the threat posed by ISIS extremists and terrorist groups linked to AL Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQMI) very seriously.
After the unprecedented deployment of Moroccan Army units in vital and strategic locations across the country including dams and major cities in what appears to be preventive measures seeking to abort and contain any potential attack from radical groups roaming the region, the Moroccan Army remains vigilant and continues to mobilize its units to the utmost.
According to Daily newspaper Al Massae, the Moroccan Air Forces have begun combing the borders with neighboring Algeria based on information from their Tunisian counterparts indicating that Al Qaeda terrorists might have dug tunnels under their border with Libya and Algeria in order to sidestep the security siege formed around them.
The combing operation conducted by Moroccan helicopters is believed to be an attempt to prevent any terrorist infiltration across the south eastern borders of the kingdom, the newspaper added.
Fears of looming terrorist attacks targeting key Moroccan cities and institutions are increasing by the day especially after the fall of passenger aircrafts into the hands of Libyan fighters in addition to around 20 million piece of weaponry that went missing and could easily end up used by Al Qaeda to launch attacks against countries of the region.
In this regard, senior Moroccan Military officials have been reported to visit the AFRICOM headquarters in Stuttgart, Germany few days ago to discuss with the American counterparts the recent developments and the rising threat of terrorist organizations spanning across the Arab world.
The military officials have also been subject to a training session on how to conduct military operations and tasks between the two sides.
