Spaniards continue to flo Morocco in search of job opportunities. More than 150 thousand are estimated to have crossed the Mediterranean and Moroccan companies benefit from Spanish skilled workers.

Under the pressure of the economic crisis in Spain, thousands of Spaniards found no other choice but to cross the Gibraltar Strait to Morocco in search of jobs. The estimated number of Spanish immigrants in Morocco is about 150 thousand people working mainly in construction work and real estate projects, especially in the northern cities of Morocco.

According to a report by the Moroccan channel 2M, immigration in the opposite direction to Morocco has skyrocketed over the past year. The economic crisis in Spain pushes highly qualified workforce and ordinary workers to set out to Morocco; which benefits Moroccan companies in terms of the new techniques these highly qualified and specialized workers bring along.

“It was the economic crisis that forced me to immigrate to Morocco and work in the sector of construction. Fortunately, job opportunities are still available in Morocco,” said José Louis Payeros, an architect working for a Moroccan construction company in Tangier.

Nabil Loudiyi, the manager of a construction company, explains that “the role of Spaniards in construction workshops in Tangier and in Morocco in general is the implementation of the new techniques they bring along. These techniques facilitate work, save us time and guarantee quality. In Morocco, we used to rely on traditional methods, but thanks to the European workers who came to work with us, many new things are added to the sector of construction.”

The increasing Spanish immigration to Morocco attests to the severity of crisis in Spain and to the boom in construction sector in Tangier, which continues to receive more workers from Morocco and Europe. This boom in construction projects in Tangier is attributed to the big number of giant investments and projects in the region such as the Tangier Med Port, car factories, textile mills, etc.
