Rabat - Morocco’s Najat Belkacem has been appointed France’s first female minister for education, in charge of the largest government budget and 15.3 million students and educators.
A new French government was announced on Tuesday by President François Hollande. One of the biggest changes was the appointment of France’s first female Education Minister, Moroccan-born Najat Vallaud-Belkacem.
The 37-year-old Moroccan-born, rising star of the French left, Najat Vallaud-Belkacem becomes the first female and the youngest ever French Education Minister to take in charge the sensitive portfolio of National Education, Higher Education and Research.
As the new French government was announced, Najat Belkacem hit the headlines of the French media outlets. Great part of the French media hailed the new Minister of Education.
“Finally, A woman in charge of National Education, Higher Education and Research,” wrote l’Express.
“Trade Unions as well as Parents Associations reacted positively toward the naming of Najat Belkacem, the new minister of National Education, one week ahead of a chaotic start of the new school year,” l’Express added.
France TV Info hailed the new female minister of Education commenting, “a good student becomes the chief of professors.”
“The French people appreciate her, and her popularity remains strong. The former spokesman for the government is not particularly familiar with the educational environment, but will rely on her art of communication to convince teachers not to go on strikes,” it added.
TF1 TV also hailed Belckacem’s success. “Two years ago, Najat Belkacem was a counselor in Lyon. In a few days, she will manage the return to school of some 12 million students,” TF1 wrote.
