Rabat - A Tangier citizen was sent to the emergency room in critical condition on Monday after being viciously beaten by a group of salafists who call themselves "Committee for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice," in the Beni Mekkada district, according to local media reports.
The self-appointed promoters of virtue reportedly intercepted the man who was supposedly under the influence of alcohol and started beating him for transgressing the Islamic Sharia which prohibits the consumption of mind-altering substances, alcoholic beverages included.
After the victim fell to the ground under the weight of blows and punches coming from all directions, the group couldn't just have enough. According to the same source, the salafis continued assaulting the victim using the back of knives in the process.
The assault caused the victim deep wounds in his back apparently from the stabbing and a broken right arm that he used for defense. Tangier judicial police managed to identify some of the attackers.
Beni Mekkada district in Tangier is notorious for being a fertile ground for fundamentalism and extremism.
