Rabat- Three Lebanese activists launched a political version of the Ice Bucket Challenge under the hashtag #BurnISISFlagChallenge. The trio of teens called upon the world to burn the flag of the Islamic State (IS). The challenge was accepted worldwide!

On Saturday, three anonymous teens from Lebanon posted a video online of them burning the flag of the Islamic State (IS), and nominated the whole world to take part.

"We nominate the whole world to #Burn-ISIS-Flag-Challenge. You have 24 hours. GO!," wrote the Lebanese activists in the caption. Soon afterwards, the campaign received considerable attention in the Arab World, before spreading worldwide within one day. Statistics say that the hashtag has appeared in more than 3,675 tweets so far.

According to The Independent, the anti-Islamic State hashtag campaign was launched shortly after the Islamic State’s military beheaded a Lebanese officer.

The challenge has been accepted by hundreds of people in the Arab World, as well many others from the US and Europe, who posted photos and videos of their own, burning Islamic State’s flags.

The Lebanese, however, were not pleased by the campaign, since the Islamic State’s flag contains religious symbols important to Muslims. Lebanon’s Minister of Justice, Ashraf Rifi, has reportedly demanded the Lebanese State detain those who burn the Islamic State’s flag in and inflict the sternest of punishments upon them, reported Asharq Al-Awsat.

According to the same source, Ashraf Rifi said this was because the Muslim declaration of faith, “There is no god but God and Muhammad is his Prophet,” is written on the flag.

“Burning the flag is therefore illegal, as it constituted an insult to the religious slogans of the Abrahamic faiths, and could stir up sectarian conflicts," she concluded.
