Marrakech - Morocco ranked 63 out of 162 countries based on the degree of peace in the country, according to the 2014 Global Peace Index (GPI), which was conducted by the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP). Morocco advanced 6 ranks in comparison to last year, coming in first in North Africa and seventh in Middle East following, Qatar (22), Kuwait (37), the United Arab Emirates (40), Jordan (56), and Oman (59).
Morocco was given a better rank than Tunisia (79), Algeria (114), and Libya (133).
Morocco’s remarkable improvement was a result of its low level of crime and its impact on society and economy, and a low risk of internal or external conflict. On the other hand, Morocco had low marks in terms of human rights and relationships with neighboring countries.
Iraq and Syria had the poorest rankings, due to their ongoing internal conflicts.
“The Middle East and North Africa (MENA) remains in the headlines as numerous conflicts stemming from the Arab Spring continue to escalate,” according to the GPI report.
European, countries and New Zealand ranked at the top of the most peaceful countries in the world.
The five first countries are Iceland (1), Denmark (2), Austria (3), New Zealand (4), and Switzerland (5), keeping the same positions as last year.
“The index gauges global peace using three broad themes: the level of safety and security in society; the extent of domestic or international conflict; and the degree of militarization,” according to the GPI report.
