Club World Cup Final: Fans to Chant ‘King of the Poor, Protect us From Thieves’

Rabat - Thousands of Moroccan fans are expected to attend the FIFA Club World Cup final between Spain's Real Madrid and San Lorenzo from Argentina scheduled to take place in the Grand Stadium of Marrakech tonight.

Moroccan fans are planning to chant slogans to hail Mohammed VI's decision to suspend Sports Minister, Mohammed Ouzzine, from his duties related to the tournament, in addition to criticizing the government for its lack of action in the wake of the Moulay Abdellah Stadium fiasco.

Local media sources quoted by Hespress website said that fans are planning to chant slogans such as "O King of the poor, protect us from the thieves", adding that they will call for the monarch's intervention to defeat corruption and public officials involved in stealing taxpayers’ money.

Controversy has been growing in Morocco since Moroccan public was dismayed at seeing the deplorable conditions of the pitch of Prince Moulay Abdellah stadium in Rabat, which had been recently renovated, turn into a “swimming pool.”

Pictures and videos of the field’s deplorable condition were widely shared on social media all over the world.

King Mohammed VI asked Prime Minister, Abdelillah Benkirane to open a thorough and comprehensive investigations to determine the responsibilities for such irregularities that marked the quarter-finals of the FIFA Club World Cup last weekend in Rabat, and to suspend the Minister from any activities in relation to this international sport’s event, including his presence in the final match, awaiting the results of the said investigation.
