Abdel Fattah El Sisi

Rabat- In an unprecedented shift in the Moroccan-Egyptian relations, Morocco’s state-owned channels 2m and Alaoula broadcasted a report that harshly criticized Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El Sisi.

While Rabat’s support of Sisi has been clear during the last six months of 2014 that may all be going in smoke after this report.

In June 2014, King Mohammed VI sent a congratulatory message to Abdel Fattah El Sisi on the occasion of his election as president of the Arab Republic of Egypt. However, today Morocco’s official channels seemed to attack El Sisi’s regime.

On Thursday, the two Moroccan state-owned channels 2m and Alaoula aired a special report on Egypt. The reports questioned the legitimacy of El Sisi’s regime, as Sisi was introduced as “the leader of the military coup,” rather than president of Egypt.

Alaoula added to its report analysis that slammed Sisi, saying that he led a military coup against a legitimate president.

This issue has already provoked a heated debate among Moroccan social media users, who were surprised by what appear to be a shift in the relations between the two countries.

This reversal is due to the last series of attacks from the Egyptian media against Morocco.

An Egyptian anchor made a comment this week describing Morocco as a land of sorcery. It is the latest in an Egyptian campaign of misinformation and insults targeting the Kingdom.

Before this incident, an Egyptian female television presenter flew into a rage, stating that Morocco ranks among the highest countries with HIV infections. She went on to say that the Kingdom has “an economy based on prostitution revenues”.

More recently, Secretary General of the Fatwa at Al-Azhar Mosque, the highest religious authority in Egypt, nullified King Mohammed’s celebration of the Eid Al Adha. Earlier, an Egyptian actor made racist remarks about Moroccans, targeting the Moroccan Jewish community in particular.
