Rabat - Cristiano Ronaldo reportedly broke up with his model girlfriend, Irina Shayk, because she allegedly decided not to attend his mother's 60th surprise birthday.
According to media reports, the Real Madrid superstar had dumped the Russian model after she unfollowed him on Twitter and failed to attend the FIFA Ballon d'Or ceremony to watch the Portuguese lift the third prestigious trophy in his career.
The model's representative, however, insisted her inability to attend the gala in Zurich was because of 'work commitments.'
Other reports suggest that the real reason why the couple ended their 5-year-romance might be Shayk's refusal to attend the 60th birthday of Ronaldo's mother Maria Dolores dos Santos Aveiro in his native Madeira.
The relationship of Irina with Ronaldo's family was at the center of tensions.
A source told Portuguese newspaper Correio de Manha: "Cristiano wanted to surprise his mum and as he spent Christmas with Irina in Dubai, he had planned to be with his mum on her birthday, but Irina didn’t want to go."
"They had such a big row that he ended up spending New Year's Eve alone with his son.
"Irina mouthed off about Dolores and Ronaldo took sides with him mum. It was the straw that broke the camel’s back because they had hadn’t been getting on well in the last few months.
The source added that Dolores wanted someone who would assume the role of mum for Cristiano Jr."
"That was not a priority for Irina," the source said.
