Rabat - A French flag, hanging on the pediment of a nursery school in Ajaccio, was burned and replaced with a Moroccan flag over the weekend.

According to Agence France Press (AFP), the flag decorated the façade of a school located in Jardins de L'empreur (Gardens of the emperor), an area with a high population of North African origins in Ajaccio.

The French flag was hung between those of the European Union and Corsica. It was reportedly picked, burned and then replaced with a Moroccan flag.

A complaint has been filed and an investigation was launched by the Directorate of Public Security Corse-du-Sud which carried out the initial findings.

Described as an insult to a national symbol, the destruction of a French flag constitutes an offense of 7,500 euros in fines and six months in prison if the act was committed in a meeting.

Many French flags were burned over the weekend in anti-French demonstrations, particularly in Niger and Pakistan, to denounce the cartoons of the Prophet Mohammed in the satirical weekly magazine Charlie Hebdo.
