Istanbul - The Moroccan parliament calls for the adoption by the UN of an international instrument to criminalise blasphemy and the mockery of the prophets, First Deputy Speaker of Morocco’s Lower House Mohamed Yatim said on Wednesday in Istanbul.
Speaking at the 10th meeting of the Parliamentary Union of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) member states (PUOICM), Yatim condemned the ridiculing of Islam and urged the members of the OIC states to push for the setting up by the UN of an instrument criminalising blasphemy.
While reiterating Morocco’s firm condemnation of all forms of terrorism whether perpetrated by groups or states, Yatim stressed that security and legal measures alone are not enough in combating terrorism. He stressed the need for addressing the root causes of this phenomenon while upholding the values of moderation, tolerance and dialogue.
Yatim also pointed out to the particularity of the context in which the PUOICM is held, noting the instability and socio-economic challenges that cast a shadow on the social cohesion of several Islamic states.
