Rabat - The African Division of African players has rejected the sanction imposed by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) against Morocco.
The African Division of the FIFPro, the International Federation of Professional Footballers, said that the players are the primary victims of CAF’s decision to suspend Morocco from participating in continental competitions for the next four years.
"Denying a nation [Morocco] the possibility of playing in three consecutive African Cup of Nations is to sacrifice an entire generation of players, the FIFPro said on Thursday.
"Prevent their playing at the highest international level, and disallow their practicing an important part of their occupation as professional footballers. It is to put a brake on their development."
In November 2014, CAF decided to strip Morocco from hosting rights of the 2015 African Cup of Nations and to ban the Moroccans from playing in the continental tournament.
This week, CAF also banned Morocco from the next two tournaments (in 2017 and 2019) and the Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) was fined $1 Million and ordered to pay 8 million euros in compensation for damages to CAF and its partners.
"It isn't for FIFPro Division Africa to say whether Morocco acted in accordance with its rights in refusing to organize the last African Cup of Nations (CAN) – relying on the precautionary principle when confronted by the Ebola epidemic - but it is for us, on the other hand, to be astonished that the penalties imposed by the CAF should be directed above all and directly against the players," the FIFPro said.
"Why pick on the players in this way? Why make them wear a hat far too big for them, making them pay, and such a heavy price, for the errors imputed to their executives? It would have been easy to ban Morocco from organizing any continental competitions for "X" years, or further to increase the financial penalties, rather than punish the footballers, who are neither guilty nor responsible but have been heavily penalized from the outset!" it added.
