Rabat - The anti-terrorism court in Salé sentenced, on Thursday, 18 individuals to prison terms ranging from 5 to 10 years on terrorism charges.
The court delivered a ten-year prison sentence to a defendant, another received 8 years jail while a Moroccan-Spanish national who served in the Spanish army received a 7-year prison term.
As part of the same verdict, seven defendants received a six-year prison sentence, three individuals were sentenced to a five-year term, two got three-year sentence in jail and three received one-year prison sentence.
The 18 individuals were indicted on charges of "forming a criminal gang aimed at preparing and perpetrating terrorist acts as part of a collective scheme, with recidivism," as well as for "belonging to a banned religious group and holding public meeting without authorization."
The Interior Ministry announced last January the busting of a jihadist cell operating in the cities of Nador, Tetouan, Al Hoceoma, Taza, Fez and Marrakech, adding that the chief of the cell received training within terrorist organizations linked to Al Qaida in Afghanistan and developed operational expertise when serving the Spanish army in Melilia before his resignation.
