Rabat – The English department at L’ecole Normale Supérieure (ENS) will host a conference under the theme “Journalism and English-language Teaching” in Rabat in association with Morocco World News on Saturday, February 28th.
The conference will host a number of journalists, English-language professors, teacher trainees, and university and high school students. The participants will discuss and exchange their opinions about journalism, how they see it in Morocco, and ways of using journalism activities in English-language teaching.
This conference began as an initiative from the English Department at the ENS and Morocco World News to introduce the attendees and teacher trainees to journalism and the many developments the field has seen. It also aims to draw a connection between journalism and the field of teaching English as a foreign language in Morocco, as well as to highlight the role of English in Moroccan journalism.
The conference will highlight the potential of English in exporting our culture and national heritage overseas, since it’s an international language. It will also highlight the role that English plays as a window for Moroccan communities abroad to the political and social changes that Morocco encounters.
The first presentation will be titled “An Introduction to Journalism,” and will be delivered by TESOL and TEFL teacher trainees from ENS. It will tackle many topics, including the history of journalism, the evolution of newspapers, ethics, and values of journalism.
Miriam Tinberg, a ?Fulbright English Teaching Assistant (ETA) at the Moroccan-American Commission for Educational and Cultural Exchange (MACECE), will give another presentation on the criteria that are considered in evaluating online newspapers and the veracity of their news. This presentation will be followed by Caitlin MCateer, who is also a Fulbright ETA at the MACECE and teacher at the ENS, whose presentation will be about activities that are related to journalism and can be used by future English-language teachers in their practicum and after graduation.
Mr. Adnane Bennis, the managing editor and Co-founder of online newspaper Morocco World News, will present the last topic. He will speak about the past and future of English as a language of journalism in Morocco.
