Meknes- English language teacher Bouazza Bagui has passed away. He died last Wednesday at the age of sixty-four while away from home and on duty in Ait Oumghar Ait Ayach, a rural town in the province of Midelt in the Meknes-Tafilalet region. With his passing, the Moroccan English language teaching community has lost another dedicated founding father.
Bouazza was one of the first English teachers and inspectors in Morocco. He taught English as a second foreign language.
Bouazza also supervised a number of inspector trainees and helped them shape their professional identities. “Mr. Bagui, Boss, as I addressed him, was not only a trainer to me, but a teacher as well, with the emotional and respectful impetus he carried.
With his insightful comments and cogent suggestions, sometimes mingled with his pedantic irony, affordable exclusively to those of his breed,” said Driss Ouannoun, an English inspector at the Meknes-Tafilalte Regional Academy of Education and training.
For many years, Bouazza was a key figure in the Moroccan Association of Teachers of English (MATE). He invested much time and effort in service of education, assuming several responsibilities in an array of organizations and committees. He was a co-author of several English and Amazigh textbooks. I know firsthand he was an excellent teacher of Amazigh because he was my teacher. May he rest in peace,” wrote Abdellatif Zaki, a former MATE President.
We are grateful to you, Ammi Bouazza, for everything you so generously shared with us and altruistically bequeathed to us. May you remain a light for us in these rocky times. Rest in peace! You amply deserve it.
