Madrid - Morocco is a partner and not a rival of the Canary Islands, said foreign minister Salaheddine Mezouar.
"The geographical closeness between Morocco's southern regions and the Canary Islands offers business opportunities for both parties in many areas," said on Tuesday Mezouar in an interview with the Canaries' paper "La Provincia".
"There is a basic element, we should not consider ourselves as rivals but rather as complementary parties," said the minister.
The Moroccan official stressed the existence of several possibilities of development between Morocco's southern regions and the Canary Islands in the fields of tourism, fisheries, building and agribusiness.
Referring to the Sahara issue, Mezouar said that the UN process is respected, noting that the region is undergoing major development thanks to Moroccan efforts.
