Rabat- A terrorist cell that was recently dismantled reportedly planned to assassinate many Moroccan politicians and public figures, including the Amazigh and Secular activist, Ahmed Assid, according to an intelligence official.
Abdel Haq Al-Khyam, Head of the Central Bureau of Judicial Investigation (BCIJ), an offshoot of Morocco’s domestic intelligence agency (DGST), revealed that the dismantled terrorist cell was planning to carry out a string of assassinations in a nationwide operation.
“Ahmed Assid was on the top of the cell’s targets,” Abdel haq Al-Khyam saidon Monday during a press conference at BCIJ’s headquarter in Sale.
He went on to add that the terrorist cell was attempting to kill several Moroccan civil, political and military figures. He confirmed that the list of targets did not include any cabinet members.
Meanwhile, the head of the newly formed judicial investigations agency, did not reveal the names of the other targets that were on the cell’s list because the investigations are still underway.
Al-Khyam said that the judicial investigations agency detained 13 members of the terrorist network during their investigations, saying that their average age is between 19 and 37.
According to the same source, members of the dismantled network had pledged allegiance to the Islamic State and vowed to target Moroccan security forces and send recruits to fight in Syria and Iraq.
BCIJ officers seized over 13 automatic weapons and more than 400 bullets, as well as a large amount of ammunition "to be used "to assassinate their targets”, Al-Khyam specified.
