Sultan Marathon des Sables

Rabat - The 30th Sultan Marathon des Sables, supported by the Ministry of Tourism, will take place on April 5th.

The Sahara Marathon is a 250 kilometer race, with about 1500 participants, from 16 to 79 years old, and from all over the world, participating as individuals and teams.

The conditions of the six-day race are tough. Racers face harsh desert winds as they cross salt-pans and desert-mountains - carrying 15kg backpacks - in temperatures of up 50°C. All this in unchartered territory, as the route is kept ‘top secret’ until just before the event starts.

This ultra- marathon is not only a soul-cleansing experience for the participants; it also has a positive impact on the local environment and communities. Through the MdS Foundation Solidarite, runners have raised funds to help hundreds of families improve their quality of life.”

The Sultan Marathon des Sables started when Patrick Bauer decided to cross 350km of uninhabited desert alone in 1984. Two years later, the first organized event had only 23 competitors.

Although won by various nations, Morocco has taken the lion’s share with wins by Lahcen and Mohamad Ahansal, Rachid Elmorabity and Mohamed Bensalah.

About 15% of the participants are women, and the Hattab twins from Jordan were the first female Middle Eastern participants.
