Rabat - The World Bank extended Morocco a loan of 130 million Dollars, part of the Fourth Municipal Solid Waste Sector Development Policy Loan.
The loan is a second in a series of two operations seeking to support the Moroccan government's efforts to implement integrated household waste management.
The loan agreement was initialed in Rabat by the World Bank’s Deputy Country Director Michael Hamaide and Morocco's economy and financed minister, Mohammed Boussaid.
The operation backs the Moroccan government priorities and efforts to improve the governance and sustainability of the household waste sector by efficient implementation of the national household waste program.
It is based on four axes: improving governance of household and similar waste management, securing the institutional and financial sustainability of household and similar waste management, conducting environmental control and follow-up and develop valorization activities.
The government's program aims to improve the accountability of public and private household waste management operators vis-à-vis citizens, promote transparent use of public funds and improve operational and environmental performance.
The World Bank representative stressed that the operation, approved by the WB last February, comes after six years of the Bank's institutional and technical support to the sector, praising the modernization of the sector of household and assimilated waste management in Morocco.
For the economy and finance minister, the Moroccan government program has, since its inception, yielded considerable results in terms of consolidating the legal framework, increased participation of the private sector, improved transparency and increased participation of citizens.
The signing ceremony took place in the presence of minister in charge of general affairs, Mohamed El Ouafa, and delegate minister in charge of environment, Hakima El Haite.
