Rabat - The General Confederation of Moroccan Enterprises (CGEM) is hosting a regional forum in Laayoune on March 28th, to Promote the Investment of MAD 4 Billion into Morocco’s Southern Region.
150 investors and company managers and 300 local and external participants will attend the regional forum, presided over by Meriem Bensalah Chakroun, President of CGEM, and Mohamed Hassad, Morocco’s Interior Minister.
The event is designed to foster and promote investment projects in the southern cities of Dakhla, Laayoune, TanTan, Guelmin, and Boujdour, and assuage concerns about the limitations of the local workforce in the region being ill-equipped to handle modern industrial and business practices.
Following the recommendations of the Economic, Social and Environmental Council (CESE) to adopt a new economic model to develop the southern provinces, CGEM has signed some 60 investment conventions. In addition, the first Marjane supermarket in the southern provinces will be inaugurated in Laayoune along with other international franchises, such as McDonald’s and Pizza Hut.
As the major job provider in the southern region, CGEM aims to improve the business climate in the south to attract private sector investors, with the hope that in the future, southern Morocco will become a jumping off point for sub-Saharan Africa.
