Morocco Dismantles 'Terrorist cell' That Recruits Combatants for Syria

Rabat - The Central Bureau of Judicial Investigation (BCIJ), an offshoot of Morocco’s domestic intelligence agency (DGST), has dismantled a new terrorist cell in Fez that was recruiting Moroccan wannabe fighters to join the ranks of the Islamic State (IS) terrorist organization in Syria and Iraq, said the Ministry of interior in a statement.

The statement said that investigations conducted by the Central Bureau of Judicial Investigation have revealed that the alleged leader of the terrorist cell "maintained strong links with the leaders of the Islamic State on the ground."

The investigations have also shown that members of the busted terrorist cell had pledged allegiance to the leader of the Islamic State, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, and received "important" financial support from abroad to facilitate their travel to the Iraqi-Syrian hotspot, the statement added.

On Tuesday, March 31st, a Moroccan couple and their sons were arrested in Spain after they planned to travel to Syria to join the ranks of extremist groups.

The two teenagers, both under the age of 16, were preparing to go to Syria through Morocco on Tuesday, the Spanish Interior ministry said in a statement. They were arrested in the Mediterranean city of Badalona, 11 kilometers from Barcelona.

The teens planned to join Jihadist groups in a trip which was to take them into Syria through Turkey, according to the Spanish authorities.

They had reportedly dropped out of school in Badalona and started studying at an Islamic centre in Morocco, according to the ministry.
