Rabat - The Socialist Union of Popular Forces (USPF), an opposition party, has called on Moroccan authorities to provide protection for its figures after it was reported that a recently dismantled terrorist cell had planned to assassinate the party's leader Driss Lachgar.
The leftist party said that its leader Driss Lachgar, a former Minister of Relations with the Parliament and a current MP, has become the target of death threats by terrorist organizations, and called on security services to provide protection to the party's headquarters and its figures.
Driss Lachgar's name was on the list of a recently dismantled terrorist cell which was planning to carry out a string of assassinations in a nationwide operation, reports say.
Members of the dismantled network had pledged allegiance to the Islamic State and vowed to target Moroccan security forces and send recruits to fight in Syria and Iraq.
The Central Bureau of Judicial Investigation (BCIJ), an offshoot of Morocco’s domestic intelligence agency (DGST), said that the aforementioned terrorist cell was attempting to kill several Moroccan civil, political and military figures.
However, the agency did not officially reveal the names of the other targets that were on the cell’s list, saying the investigations are still underway.
Following the threats issued by terrorist groups to assassinate many Moroccan politicians and public figures, armored vehicles and extra security were put at the disposal of members of the government and a number of the country’s senior officials.
The vehicles are reported to be similar to moving fortresses impenetrable by bullets and bombs. The vehicles have bulletproof technology used in the windows and can resist attacks from different types of weapons.
