King Felipe and King Mohammed VI

Rabat - King Felipe of Spain called King Mohammed VI and offered Spanish assistance in the rescue operations of the three Spanish cavers who went missing in Morocco’s High Atlas mountains on Wednesday April 1, according to Spanish daily El Pais.

The phone call between the two monarchs took place last Friday. During the conversation, Philip VI offered technical and human material to accelerate the recovery of the Spanish cavers.

According to the same source, the Moroccan monarch accepted the Spanish offer and allegedly ordered the competent Moroccan authorities to coordinate with their Spanish counterparts.

However, the Moroccan gendarmerie thought they were capable of conducting the rescue operation on their own, and, as result, they did not authorize the participation of Spanish rescue workers on time. It was not until Sunday when the latter were allowed to help in the rescue operation.

Two Spanish cavers died earlier this week after they were trapped at the bottom of a cliff in Morocco’s High Atlas Mountains.

The rescue operation raised eyebrows in Spain with many Spanish media questioning the way in which Moroccan authorities handled the situation.

But Spanish Prime Minister, Mariano Rajoy, thanked the Moroccan government for the efforts it made since the rescue operation.

“The Moroccan authorities put great effort and mobilized all available means,” Rajoy told Spanish radio RNE last Monday.
