Speculations on a probable future destruction of the internet

Rabat - Morocco has been ranked 42nd out of 50 countries for internet connectivity, ICT usage and digital transformation in a global survey conducted by Chinese networking firm Huawei.

The survey dubbed the Global Connectivity Index (GCI) was released on the opening day of Huawei's Global Analyst Summit in Shenzhen, Southern China.

The Chinese company says its survey takes into account four elements as the cornerstones of connectivity: supply, demand, experience and potential. It also identifies big data analytics, cloud services, Internet of Things (Iot), broadband and data centers as enablers of digital transformation.

In addition to ranking countries based on how they are moving towards a more connected and digitalized economy, GCI says that 20 per cent growth in ICT investments could see a country's GDP increase by 1 per cent. "Countries with higher GCI scores have higher GDP per Capita. The results of the GCI model show that ICT technology has become a new production factor which drives the economic transformation of a country," the study added.

The survey has found that developing countries performed better in building the supply of connectivity in 3G coverage and mobile adoption. However, they lag behind the mature countries in building up their datacenter capabilities (core).

Developing countries also lag behind the mature economies by two folds in supplying, adopting, and using transformation technologies of Broadband, Cloud, Internet of Things, Big Data, and Datacenter.

Among the survey's key findings was that Datacenter investment by developed countries is three times that of developing countries, which is the major catalyst of could proliferation as "the edge does not exist without the core."

With a GCI score of 85, the United States is ranked number one in the survey, followed by Sweden, Singapore, Switzerland, and the UK.

Commenting on the index, Kevin Zhang, President of Huawei Corporate Marketing, said, "The Global Connectivity Index is not merely a ranking of countries. We see it as a platform to partner with policymakers and enterprise leaders to identify, harness, and create new digital economy opportunities with the aim of building a Better Connected World."
