Rabat - Morocco has been ranked 92nd out of 158 countries in the 2015 World Happiness index which took into account data from 2012-2015.
The third edition of the World Happiness index was produced by the Sustainable Development Solution Network (SDSN), an initiative under the United Nations. It bases its rankings on data from the Gallup World Poll and takes into account variables such as real GDP per capita, healthy life expectancy, corruption levels and social freedoms.
In the index dominated by wealthy Nordic countries, the kingdom moved seven places to the 92nd position. In the 2013 edition of the World Happiness index, Morocco was ranked 99th. The index considers measures such as GDP per capita, social support, healthy life expectancy, freedom to make life choices, generosity, perceptions of corruption and dystopia, a state or a place where everything is bad or unpleasant.
"Increasingly happiness is considered a proper measure of social progress and goal of public policy," the report said, adding that "a rapidly increasing number of national and local governments are using happiness data and research in their search for policies that could enable people to live better lives."
According to the index, Switzerland is the happiest country in the world. Iceland, Denmark, Norway and Canada rounded off the top five. The United States came 15th, followed by the United Kingdom (21), Japan (46) and China (84).
The top 10 countries are once again all small or medium-sized western industrial countries, of which seven are in Western Europe. Chad, Guinea, Ivory Coast, Burkina Faso, Afghanistan, Benin, Syria, Burundi and Togo were the least happy.
The United Arab Emirates has ranked 20 on the World Happiness Index, making it the happiest country in the Arab region. It was followed closely by Oman (22), Qatar (28) and Saudi Arabia which ranked 35 on the list.
