Boston- The Moroccan watermelon is in high demand throughout Europe. Within only a year, the export of the fruit from Morocco has increased dramatically by 260%.  In terms of quantity, in 2014 Morocco exported more than 30,000 tons of watermelons, 8,000 in 2013, 4,800 in 2012, 5,500 in 2011 and 3,300 tons in 2010.

According to the website “FreshPlaza,” which has revealed some statistics concerning the exports, Morocco and Turkey are the most competitive exporters and have surpassed Spain, which was the previous primary exporter in the European Union.

Trailing behind Morocco, Turkey was able to increase its exports from 7,000 tons in 2013 to 18,000 tons in 2014, an augmentation of 152.5% in exports to the European Union.

Other non-European countries that have experienced an increase in watermelon exports include Costa Rica, with an impressive increase by 19.7% in 2014 (32,000), Panama (23.7%), Senegal (+6.9%), and Tunisia (+7.5%). In total, these countries, including Morocco and Turkey, were able to sell more than 150,000 tons of watermelons in Europe in 2014, an impressive growth that reached 38%, a huge growth compared to the 109,000 tons delivered the previous year.
