The United States’ Out Of Control Obsession With Weapons

Iraqi Kurdish Peshmerga fighters on Sunday head to the Mosul Dam, which they retook from Islamic State militants.

Rabat - The US is famous for many things. Besides having an affinity for fast food, being a "melting pot" of cultures, and hosting parties littered with red solo cups, the US is also known for its excessive use of weaponry whenever the chance arises.

For years, nations have pointed out the romance between the US and it's beloved guns, one that is unnecessary at times.

The US is urged to send weapons abroad whenever a mere whisper of a conflict is heard. Libya was met with weapons when the "freedom fighters" wanted to overthrow Gaddafi, Kiev got a shipment of their own when Eastern Ukraine wanted to break away from US-backed government, and Jihadists and Kurds alike were locked and loaded when conflicts arose as well.

The approach has not proven to be popular amongst the people nor significantly successful, yet it continues to be a fundamental part of US foreign policy.

This weapon-friendly approach has developed into a fruitful business for the military-industrial complex, which provides the funds for Beltway think tanks. The US rushed in 1,000 anti-tank Javelin missiles to destroy the tanks left behind by the Iraqi army last month, an $8 million investment.

This is not the first, last, or most expensive business transaction by any means.

An estimated one billion American taxpayer dollars has been spent on weapons in the last year. Apart from costing its people a fortune, America's reckless love affair puts the country as a whole in a peculiar position globally. As Department official Peter van Buren said, "basically, the US is supplying all sides of the conflict."
