#Justice for Ray

In Morocco, torturing animals is not yet a crime. In fact, animal abuse is an everyday thing in Morocco. Whether it is kids hitting dogs with rocks or pulling cats by their tails or even men torturing mules, animal abuse is a national widespread occurrence easily observable. Is this abuse due to lack of awareness or lack of education or even both?

When it seems like the abuse can’t get any worse, it does. And though any case of animal abuse is heartbreaking, but Ray’s case is especially disheartening.

"On the morning of Saturday May 30, I received a phone call from students at the Lissasfa wire factory in Casablanca. They informed me that they had found a suffering stray dog. I could have never prepared myself for what I was going to see when I arrived," said Aziza the founder of the association Comme Chiens et Chats.

Ray was found in horrible condition. He was covered in blood, his eyes were gouged out, his mouth was torn in a sadistic way, and his penis slashed. Ray’s rescuer took him to the veterinarian. She did not choose the "merciful" treatment, euthanasia. Instead, she wrote about Ray’s abuse on social media and people moved by the story donated their time, money, and services to help the suffering creature and fight against animal abuse.

Ray, Plight of an Abused Dog

A page was created on Facebook called "Justice Pour Ray" to seek justice for what happened to Ray and find the twisted X who performed this cruel act against nature. This individual (or individuals) is dangerous to society, because those who are able to hurt an animal so mercilessly might also hurt a human being.

According to the page "Justice Pour Ray," with the help of many Moroccans and a foreign association that protects animals, a march will be held soon. The aim of the march is to sensitize people to the basic fact that animals are individuals and can feel pain. There is a law against animal abuse in Morocco, but this law is rarely applied and has not yet been used against anyone in Ray’s case.
