Morocco Arrests French Couple Involved in Evangelization of Moroccans in Marrakech

Rabat - Moroccan Gendarmerie arrested a French couple engaged in evangelical activities in southern Morocco.

According to daily newspaper Al Massae, the French couple of Italian decent was arrested near Marrakech for trying to "proselytize" in the country.

Gendarmerie elements were alerted by a waiter who works in a tourist complex. The waiter in question was immediately suspicious when the French couple, accompanied by children, began piling up stacks of books on Christianity as well as Bibles on the table.

The books were seized during the arrest of the couple. The Gendarmerie also found a suitcase full of printed materials on Christianity in the possession of the couple.

The couple comes to Marrakech for two to three months a year to indulge in their missionary activity, the same source added.

Evangelization is a considered a crime in Morocco and anyone who engages in it may face prison time.

According to article 220 of the Moroccan Penal Code, a proselytizer may face “six months to three years prison and a fine of 100 to 500 Dirhams” for using the “means of seduction in order to convert” a Muslim “to another religion, either by exploiting his/her weakness or his/her needs, or using for these purposes education, health, asylums and orphanage institutions.”
