Rabat - The Party of Authenticity and Modernity (PAM), one of Morocco's major opposition parties, added their voice to the controversy surrounding Nabil Ayouch's film "Much Loved" and Jennifer Lopez's Mawazine concert that was broadcast on Moroccan channel 2M.
During a meeting on Thursday near the capital Rabat, the Party's political Bureau has warned against what they described as "the ideological control on freedom of expression and creation that the constitution guaranteed."
PAM denounced in a communiqué carried by French-speaking news website Yabiladi the "repeated attempts" to encircle the "art and creativity" in the country.
Their statement was a tacit reference to the Party of Justice and Development (PJD), their main political rival and the leader of the governmental coalition.
PJD-affiliated Minister of Communication Mustapha El Khalfi made the decision to ban Nabil Ayouch's latest feature drama on prostitution in Morocco's tourism hub Marrakech.
The PJD leadership also expressed their outrage at the suggestive manner in which Jennifer Lopez danced and performed during her Mawazine concert on Saturday May, 30th.
The party's chief Abdelilah Benkirane even called on the High Authority for Audio-visual Communication (HACA), the country's regulatory body that regulates the practices of TV and radio channels, to take “its legal provisions regarding this violation, as it did with others."
According to the PAM, the PJD's moves are "an encroachment on the powers of other constitutional institutions, empowered to take, where appropriate, legal measures".
The party has also invited Moroccan politicians to "raise the level of public debate," and to refrain from using such issues for electoral purposes that "sow hatred, violence and excommunication."
