Taroudant - On Wednesday, Barclay Primary School in Leyton, East London, banned Muslim students from fasting during Ramadan.
A week before the beginning of the holy month of Ramadan, the school reportedly sent a letter to parents asking them to not allow their children to fast, for “health reasons”.

The school allegedly said that it would not accept fasting students during Ramadan, claiming, “Their health could be compromised if they were deprived of sustenance and water.”
The Muslim community in the United Kingdom denounced the school’s decision, believing that schools should seek to respect the religious affiliations of students and stand by parents instead of enforcing rules that go against students’ religion.
However, the school said in a letter issued on June 10, that in the previous Ramadan, they had recorded health issues, and fasting students had difficulties coping with the school’s curriculum.
"Previously, we have had a number of children who became ill and children who fainted or who have been unable to fully access the school curriculum in their attempt to fast," the letter said.
The school added: “We are reliably informed that in Islamic Law, children are not required to fast during Ramadan, only being required to do so when they become adults.”
