Moroccan Magazine Under Fire for Cover Asking 'Should We Burn Homosexuals'

Rabat - Weekly magazine Maroc Hebdo recalled its latest issue on homosexuality, whose cover asked "Should we burn homosexuals?", after it was deemed by many as homophobic.

The cover depicts two young men at a swimming pool, looking 'intimately' into each other's eyes, with the banner headline "Shall we burn homosexuals?"

Maroc Hebdo said on Friday it "decided to withdraw this issue from sale and its site on the internet given the particularly strong reactions [it caused] through social media."

"Sure it's an individual right. But what about moral and religious values," the sub-head added.

The magazine's latest issue caused outrage on social media, with many online commentators describing it as "homophobic". But, the magazine said it was designed to provoke debate.

In a statement the magazine said that "it presents at the same time its apologies to all readers who were offended by this theme and it stresses it has no other requirement other than to continue to work for the expansion of a national debate."
