Rabat - Two police officers in the region of Sidi Kacem in central Morocco opened fire on drug traffickers after violent clashes between the two sides on Wednesday night.

According to the weekend edition of the Moroccan daily Assabah the cause of the fire was due to a violent altercation between members of a drug trafficking network and the municipal judicial police.

The head of the drug cartel , referred to as  "Timoumi" was in possession of 10 kilos of opium, 500 grams of cannabis and a significant amount of tobacco that he intended to sell for the month of Ramadan, a month when the drug trafficking reaches its peaks.

The police spotted the alleged criminals and tried to catch them in the act.  However when the head of the drug cartel identified a member of the police force, he and the rest of his members, attacked the police with swords.

The police officer and partner opened fire to ward off the attacks.  It took three shots fired by the police officers, for the drug traffickers to surrender.  The police was able to take control of the situation before local residents and elements of the police gathered on the scene.

According to the Arabic Daily, the scientific police went to the scene of the incident to collect all the necessary elements for the investigation. The white weapons used by the traffickers were seized and handed over to the General Prosecutor of the Criminal Court of Sidi Kacem and the drugs seized were transferred to the Department of Customs and Indirect Taxes.
