According to a study published on Washington Post , Morocco ranks as the least ethnically diverse country in Africa.
Ethnicity, a social construct, is the key variable on which the study bases the classification of the African countries. The list of the most ethnically diverse countries is topped by African countries. The continent’s colonial history is among the main factors determining a high degree of ethnicity.
Other African countries, such as Egypt and South Africa, have a longer and more complex colonial history than Morocco and are ranked more ethnically diverse.
According to the Harvard Institute paper, the most diverse African countries were once divided into many territories by the colonizing European powers. While strong democracy is associated with ethnic homogeneity, many of the countries with weak democracy have proved less ethnically diverse.
