Rabat - Moroccans are mobilizing in solidarity with two young women who were arrested in the outskirts of Agadir last week for wearing “indecent skirts”.
Many Moroccans took to social media, especially Facebook, to voice their anger at the decision made by the local authorities to arrest the two women and bring them to court.
The two women are scheduled to appear before court on July 6.
A petition was launched in solidarity with the women on Avaaz.com immediately after their arrest. The petition has so far garnered 10,718 signatures, and the number of people who are joining the outpouring of solidarity is increasing.
“This is a regression and a case that opens the way for those who want to rise up in moralizing or preaching to impose their own laws! This is a breach of the principles of living together and the security of citizens,” the petition reads.
Echoing the text of the petition, most people who expressed their support of the two hairstylists call their arrest a “breach on individual freedoms and a violation of human rights.”
Many have expressed their fear that events such as this might tarnish Morocco’s reputation as country of openness, tolerance, and respect for other cultures.
“Morocco crushing women’s individual freedoms, their basic rights by a mentality worthy of the Middle Ages, we are sick! We must stop the Talibanization of MOROCCO,” said Rachid Berrada, an active social media user from Casablanca.
Voicing her outrage at what she considers a breach of the individual freedoms of Moroccans, another social media user wondered about the silence of Moroccan authorities regarding the case of the two women, and accused them of being accomplices in what has happened to them.
“I wonder why they close their eyes and ears on these horrible things. Aren’t our officials accomplice?” Fatima Robay, a university professor from Fez asked.
