Rabat - Same-sex marriage is now legal across the United States after the US Supreme Court has ruled that all states must issue marriage licenses to gay couples.

Five of the nine court justices determined that the right to marriage equality was protected under the equal protection clause of the 14th amendment of the US constitution.

The states affected by the new ruling are Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, most of Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, Tennessee and Texas.

Speaking from the White House, President Barack Obama said the ruling is a "victory for America".

"This decision affirms what millions of Americans already believe in their hearts: when all American are treated as equal, we are all more free," he said.

The decision was greeted by scenes of jubilation across the United States as it marked the end of a decade-long campaign to overturn the ban on same-sex marriage.

The first state to allow same-sex marriage in the United States was Massachusetts, which granted the right in 2004. The ruling has seen the number of states allowing same-sex marriages from only two states in 2008, to all 50 states in 2015.

With this decision, the US becomes the 21st country to lift the ban on same-sex marriages in the world.
