Taroudant - Morocco created a religious institute, Mohammed VI Foundation for African Ulemas, in order to promote a tolerant Islam and curb the growing threat of terrorism.
The new religious institute aims to unite religious scholars and imams of the kingdom with those in other African countries in an effort to serve the interests of Islam. It will particularly advocate tolerance and promote research and studies in Islamic thought and culture.
The Moroccan initiative aspires to maintain and preserve the unity of the Islamic religion, decrease current extremist religious beliefs and creeds, and open a constructive dialog and exchange of views between Islamic scholars in the African continent.
The institute is keen to protect the Islamic faith and the spiritual unity of the African people from all conflicts, extremist movements, and misleading ideas that affect the sanctity of Islam and its teachings.
Under the supervision of King Mohammed VI, the new institute intends to inculcate the values of moderate Islam as it has always been practiced in Morocco (based on the Ashaari doctrine and the Malikite School of jurisprudence) to the new generations of imams and preachers.
In the fight against religious extremism that has emerged in Africa, Morocco has established itself as leader, providing training for the hundreds of imams from Africa and some European countries, including France and Belgium.
Since the enthronement of King Mohammed VI in 1999, the kingdom has adopted new foreign policy which puts Africa in in the center of its priorities and seeks to and reinforces partnerships and cooperation between Morocco and its allies.
