Morocco Expresses Solidarity With Tunisia, Condemns Terrorism

Rabat - Tunisia's President Beji Caid Essebsi has declared a state of emergency on Saturday one week after a gunman killed 38 foreign tourists, mainly British, in the resort city of Sousse.

The state of emergency temporarily gives the Tunisian government, army and security forces more powers and limits certain rights such as the right to public assembly.

A statement from the Tunisian presidency said President Beji Caid Essebsi is due to address the nation on national television to give more details about the decision.

The gunman who carried out the attack has been identified as 23-year-old Seifeddine Rezgui. Tunisian authorities said he had probably trained with the Ansar al-Sharia group in Libya.

Eight people have been arrested in connection with the attack. The government also said it had uncovered the network behind the Sousse attack.

Tunisian authorities have also pledged to close nearly 80 mosques accused of spreading extremism.

The last time Tunisia had a state of emergency was during the 2011 uprising against toppled president Zine el-Abidine Ben Ali.
