Rabat - A new report by the Jerusalem-based think tank Jewish People Policy Institute (JPPI) who keeps count of the worldwide Jewish population revealed that as of 20152,400 Jews live in Morocco.
The report shows that Morocco and South Africa are among the few African countries where Jews live.
Hosting over 2,400 Jews, Morocco ranks first in the list of Arab countries with the highest Jewish population and second in Africa. South Africa tops the list of African countries, with a record of 70,000 Jews living in the country.
The report counted 14.2 million Jews worldwide, nearing the global Jewish population before the Holocaust when their number stood 16.6 million.
After Israel, which is home to 6,103,200 Jews, the report ranked the United States as second country in the world with the highest Jewish population, estimated at 5,700,000.
France is a distant third with about 475,000 Jews, followed by Canada.
The report said that the rise of the global Jewish population had not only been due to a natural growth, mainly in Israel, but also due to the “changing patterns of Jewish identification.”
In the US, 59% of those with just one Jewish parent now identify themselves as Jewish, a first in history,' the report said.
