Rabat - As tension rises in Egypt, the leader of the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Shams (ISIS), Abu Bakral-Baghdadi, has reportedly urged followers of his terror group to destroy Egyptian cultural icons such as Pyramids and the Sphinx, saying, “it’s a religious duty.”
After having smashed statues in the museum of Mosul, demolishing the ancient cities of Hatra and Nimrud, and looting the city of DurSharrukin, ISIS is now setting its sights on Egypt’s famous landmarks.
ISIS “caliph” Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi allegedly said that destroying Egypt’s national monumentsis a “religious duty” that must be carried out by those who worship Islam, as idolatry is strictly banned in the religion.
Speaking to Daily Telegraph, United Kingdom radical Islamist Anjem Choudary said “when Egypt comes under the auspices of the Khalifa (Caliphate), there will be no more Pyramids, no more Sphinxes, and no more idolatry. This will be just.”
Earlier this year, a Kuwaiti cleric also called for the destruction of Egypt’s pyramids and sphinx.
Kuwaiti newspaper Al-Watan daily quoted Ibrahim al-Kandari as saying, «The fact that early Muslims who were among the Prophet Mohammed's followers did not destroy the pharaohs' monuments upon entering Egyptian soil does not mean that we shouldn't do it now."
This threat comes after ISIS launched a wave of simultaneous attacks on Egyptian security forces last week.
Militants launched coordinated suicide attacks and ground assaults on Egyptian military installations.
These attacks mainly targeted the Sinai Peninsula, where a terror group loyal to ISIS remains the dominant jihadi group.
The Egyptian Special Forces struck back with several airstrikes against terrorist positions, including a raid on a Cairo apartment full of Muslim Brotherhood leaders.
