Rabat - Several sit-ins are to be held on Monday across Morocco to denounce the "violation" of individual freedoms following a recent wave of controversies sparked by a series of events (two girls facing charges for wearing miniskirts, a mob attacking a gay man in Fez, authorities banning a film on prostitution, etc.), that divided the Moroccan society.
Members of the "wearing a dress is not a crime" Facebook campaign, which has garnered nearly 14,000 likes as of this writing, have called for a "National Day for Our Individual Freedoms" to be held on Monday at 22.30 in several Moroccan cities, including Rabat, Casablanca, Tangier, Marrakech and Agadir.
The "wearing a dress is not a crime" campaign was launched last month in support of two women who are facing charges of "gross indecency" after they were accused of wearing suggestive clothes few days before the beginning of the holy month of Ramadan.
"We are witnessing these days a push of extremism in our country. Indeed, a genuine political and administrative armada is launched against our individual freedoms and fundamental rights," reads a post on the event's official Facebook page.
"Our duty as citizens of this country is to deal with different forms of obscurantism which some ideological currents and political parties try to impose on us.
We are participating in this event to show our determination to defend our freedoms, so that a Morocco of tolerance, equality and respect of the other can finally see the light."
