Rabat - Morocco’s Salaheddine Mezouar, Secretary General of the National Gathering of Independents Party has allegedly slammed Ahmed Mansour over his offensive remarks directed at Moroccan journalists, saying that his comments were “grubby” and proves how  “arrogant” he is.

The Secretary General of the National Gathering of Independents Party, Salaheddine Mezouar, released a statement on Tuesday in which he condemned the views of Ahmed Mansour, a journalist in the Qatar-based network Al Jazeera, on the Moroccan media and its journalists.

Last week, Ahmed Mansour attacked Moroccan politicians and journalists with offensive remarks.  He labeled some Moroccan journalists as being “pimps, bastards, corrupt and insects”. The insults came as a response to a story published by the daily newspaper Asabah and other Moroccan websites about his alleged marriage to a Moroccan woman who is affiliated with the current Islamist Party of Justice and Development in Morocco.

Salaheddine Mezouar said that Ahmed Almansour’s attack on Moroccan journalists and politicians were “grubby” and reflected his “arrogance and recklessness.”

Mezouar went on to add that even if the Moroccan media had reported false news, the press had appropriate mechanisms in place that would have allowed for corrections. Ahmed Mansour could have filed a lawsuit against the newspaper rather than insulting the Moroccan journalists and politicians.

In Mezouar’s statement, he mentioned that he considered the insults to Moroccan citizens who play a significant role in shaping the Moroccan public opinion, to be disrespectful to Morocco and its sanity.

On Sunday, the National Union of the Moroccan Press, (Le Syndicat National de la Presse Marocaine SNPM), denounced the statements given by Ahmed Mansour about the Moroccan press as being “offensive, defamatory and obscene”.

In an apology to the Moroccan journalists, politicians and citizens he had offended, Ahmed Mansourgave a statement on his facebok page yesterday acknowledging his mistake in reacting aggressively to what some news outlets published on his personal life.

He expressed his hope that Moroccan journalists would accept his sincere apology. “I have the courage to apologize for any unintentional mistake and insult I may have said and hope that my apologies will be accepted with courage”.
