Rabat - Morocco’s General Directorate for Territorial Surveillance (DGST) reportedly made more than 44,000 arrests during the month of June.

44,223 people were arrested for various offenses across Morocco during the period from May 25 to June 30, 2015, according to a statement released by the DGST.

The DGST said that 26,890 of the total suspects were arrested in flagrante delicto, while 13,698 were wanted for their involvement in serious crimes. 370 other suspects were arrested for drug trafficking, and the remaining 3,265 were arrested during police operations conducted in the vicinity of schools.

The statement noted that the majority of the suspects arrested in flagrante delicto, or who were already wanted by police, were involved in various crimes, ranging from sexual assault to violence in schools, theft, and assaults with knives.

This statement came only a few of days after Ministry of Interior issued a report revealing unprecedented figures on the number of crimes recorded in the country.
The number of crimes and offenses recorded during the first six months of the current year amounted to about 425,000. Casablanca recorded the largest number of crimes in the kingdom, the report concluded.
