Eid El Fitr in the US will be Thursday, Fiqh Council of North America

New York- Eid El Fitr holiday, which marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan will, be celebrated on Friday July 17, according to the Fiqh Council of North America.

Unlike most Islamic countries, the FCNA bases its decision on astronomical calculations rather than on the traditional sighting of the moon with naked eyes.

According to the FCNA, astronomical calculation is as an acceptable Shar’ia method for determining the beginning of Lunar months including the months of Ramadan and Shawwal.

This year’s calculations coincide with the sighting of the moon with naked eyes in many Muslim countries. Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Kuwait, Qatar and Indonesia announced on Thursday evening that the Eid El Fitr holiday will be celebrated on Friday.

The Islamic calendar is based on the sighting of the moon, which causes the Islamic year to be about 11 days less than the Gregorian year.

The beginning of Islamic months may vary from one country to another and depends on whether the moon has been sighted or not.
