New York’s Empire State Building Lit Up in Green to Celebrate Eid al Fitr

Rabat - New York City’s emblematic Empire State Building lit up in Green on Friday to share with Muslims around the world their celebration of Eid al Fitr, the three-day holiday that marks the end of Ramadan.

“The skyscraper was illuminated with the green lights until 2:00 a.m. (EST) on Saturday morning when the building traditionally turns out its lights,” according to AFP.

New York City’s most famous landmark has carried out the tradition "for several years now, it is an annual lighting," a building spokeswoman was quoted by AFP as saying.

Most Muslim countries started the celebrations of Eid al Fitr on Friday. Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, Jordan Egypt, Indonesia, announced on Thursday that the holiday would kick off on Friday.

In Morocco the celebrations of the holiday begin on Saturday. The beginning of the months of Islamic calendar is based on the sighting of the moon, as set out in the holy Quran.
