El Jadida - The UN Global Counterterrorism Strategy, unanimously adopted by all member states in 2006 and reaffirmed in June 2014, is a comprehensive approach to fight terrorism, wrote a note to the press on the sidelines of the two-day inaugural conference on "border security" (BSI), hosted by Morocco in El Jadida.
Composed of 4 pillars, this strategy provides a strategic framework for states to elaborate global responses to terrorism based on human rights and the law.
The first pillar provides measures to eradicate conditions propitious for spreading terrorism, the second concerns measures to prevent and combat terrorism, the third includes measures to reinforce the UN's/states' capacity to prevent and combat terrorism, and the fourth involves measures to ensure the respect of human rights and the rule of law as a fundamental basis to fight terrorism.
Since 2006, the implementation of the Strategy progressed thanks to efforts by member states, supported by UN bodies, but much remains to be done, said the note.
The inaugural conference of the joint initiative by the UN Counter-Terrorism Centre (UNCCT) and the Global Counterterrorism Forum (GCTF) on "border security" (BSI) opened, on Tuesday in El Jadida with the participation of over 30 countries.
This event, which will run until July 22, is a platform to discuss and analyze shortcomings related to terrorism and border security. It is also an occasion to share good practices regarding cooperative frontier management.
