Moroccan Man Sets Himself on Fire as Germany Refused to Grant Him Asylum

Rabat - A Moroccan man who fled Spain last month has been detained by German police over suspected links to the so-called terror group the Islamic State, AFP reported.

The Moroccan national, who lives in Spain, was detained on Tuesday in Stuttgart in southwestern Germany, the Spanish Interior ministry said in a statement on Wednesday.

The Moroccan was "very active on social networking sites, playing the role of recruiter by touting the benefits of joining ISIS fighters," the ministry said.

In early July, he had expressed his intention to fight alongside ISIS extremists in Syria and invite his followers on social networks to join him. A Spanish court had issued a warrant for his arrest.

He escaped police raids on the island of Lanzarote on Spain's Canary Islands, in which a woman was arrested on suspicion of recruiting young women and teenagers for travel to Syria.

The Spanish government said at least 116 Spaniards have left the country to join extremist groups in the Middle East.
