Rabat - Moroccan Police led an operation this week to reinforce vigilance and fight against crime and banditry in the Kingdom.
In a statement made by the Moroccan General Delegation for National Security, the operation, which was given the name "coup de poing" (punch), aimed at arresting dangerous criminals that impose a threat to the welfare of citizens.
Conducted throughout this week, the enforcement operation targeted the major cities of Casablanca, Rabat, Fez, Oujda, Nador, Marrakech, Tangier, Safi, Agadir, Tetouan, Mohammedia and Temara.
The operation aims to "to ensure peace for the citizens," an official at the General Delegation for National Security said.
The same source added that the Police are carrying out their regular duties like "the verification of identities, the control of vehicles and motorcycles and the search of ‘wanted criminals’ involved in felonies and misdemeanors.”
During the course of this operation, the Police said on Monday that "thousands of arrests took place and ‘wanted individuals’ or those linked with criminal cases were presented before the Prosecutor."
Last week, the Police arrested 1,294 people involved in crimes across the Kingdom, and fined about 6,241 drivers caught in violations of the Highway Code throughout the entire nation.
While Morocco has a good reputation in the fight against terrorism and external threats, more security reinforcement operations are needed to ensure traffic safety and citizens’ peace in public places.
